As our cultural obsession with identity has waxed, our ability to talk to each other has waned. The price of a misplaced word is too high. The conceit of “lived experience” is too stifling. The pressure to “stay in your lane” is too pervasive. It’s easier and safer to keep your mouth shut. And this leaves the floor open for the most unreasonable, toxic voices on a given issue.
I honestly can't tell at this point whether it's stupidity or just a lack of imagination that makes people unable to say this distinction. I think, people like Charles have given zero thought to all the way in which the believe that any man who says he's a woman is literally a woman has implications beyond his wardrobe choices.
And even though I lay some of these implication out in the article, maybe his self-righteousness kicked in before he had time to read them.
I can't stand the whole "privilege/not privilege" view of the world, but I am tempted to say that he doesn't see it because it's not something that would ever affect him. It's a complete lack of empathy for women, and unfortunately it seems extremely common.
"I am tempted to say that he doesn't see it because it's not something that would ever affect him"
Yep, I think this is exactly it. In fact, he says quite clearly that this doesn't affect him so he doesn't see why it's worth talking about. Almost everybody, who thinks this issue doesn't matter is unaffected by, and hasn't thought about, the women it affects. This is also true of the women who are quite happy to talk over female athletes and inmates and rape victims and disabled women in need of intimate care, because these issues don't affect them personally.
But again, this begs the question, why weigh in at all if you think it doesn't matter?
The 21st Century Social "Justice" Warriors want you to think "it's easier and safer to keep your mouth shut." "Positionality," "lived experience," etc. are just fancy terms for "shut up."
When taking the "easier and safer" path becomes the prevailing view, literally everything valuable will quickly go to complete shit.
"literally everything valuable will quickly go to complete shit."
Yep, sadly I'm pretty sure we've already hit the "it's easier and safer keep your mouth shut" stage for an awful lot of people. That's why so many social issue s have become such a mess. Cancel culture is incredibly effective as a deterrent.
Charles ignores how much transactivisim isn't living in harmony with others, which is why they get so much backlash. There may also be a subtler reason for Charles's unwillingness to speak out for others; transactivism, being as at least some of it is clearly about rolling back women's rights including our right to privacy without potential male predators in places where we remove our clothes, which is that depending on what kind of a man he is perhaps he's happy to see male victories over 'those uppity bitches'.
I harbour a lot of suspicion about so-called male 'progressives' who cheer on trans rights to the exclusion of women's rights.
Sometimes I feel like women and Jews have something in common: The left always finds it acceptable to throw us under the bus.
"I harbour a lot of suspicion about so-called male 'progressives' who cheer on trans rights to the exclusion of women's rights."
Yeah, especially when you look at how these "progressives" talk to and about women who disagree with them. Same thing, natch, with racial issues. For all the talk about the far-right, and all the things I've written about race, I've never, literally never, had a conservative use a racial slur or other derogatory racial language in a conversation. Even when we've strongly disagreed. "Progressives"? That's a very different story.
Steve, even in my drowsy state at 2:17 in the morning I can still see the force and sense of your arguments and "opinions", which are not really opinions, just clearer statements of the facts. Thanks for keeping up the commentary.
I am on board with the original ideas of the various issues that actually relate to justice, but so many of the SJWs are insufferable assholes openly expressing hate that in some ways I hope they are as miserable as they claim to be. This is probably being largely driven by the Medium writers with a chip on their shoulder who instantly resort to ad homonym rants about the perceived flaws in anyone of isn't one of their loyal silo ditto heads and straw men. What do they call justice?
Yes, it is personal since the "oppressor" of choice is white, male, heterosexual boomers -> me. But I honestly feel for members of any "group" that has that shit aimed at them. You only have to check the news, and I'm thinking of more than the algorithm driven networks to see where that leads.
WTH!? "Allies" Is it a war? They are escalating toward real war. They won't like it when they get it and must wonder every day when they come home if they still have a family.
"I am on board with the original ideas of the various issues that actually relate to justice"
This is what I find so infuriating. I'm completely on board with the ideals of social justice. I'm probably a bit more pragmatic than some, but I bet on most "woke" issues I'd agree with their stated aims. But then in practice, the things they say and do are so far from anything that might lead to a better, more just world, and are so often contrary to that aim, that it amazes me more people can't see it.
It's not just theoretical, the harm trans activism is doing to perceptions of trans people is palpable, and is showing up in surveys of attitudes even amongst young, progressive people. Worse, it's spilling over onto the rest of the LGB community too.
"The problem here is the perceived notion that opinions are valid and necessary. Also that something must be “understood” by outside opinions for it to be considered valid" WROTE THE MAN who expressed his OPINIONS lol. And we all base all of our somethings on outside opinions, mostly we hope others will find them just, ethical, good, fair and understandable - and if they don't some of us go on crusades and burn others on the stake- because other's opinions matter and if they do not understand some of us will obliterate them.
If “trans” healthcare means poisoning and neutering children, it’d take a bank vault to stop me from signing petitions promoting laws to ban it.
Only one in a thousand claim”trans” has GID, most of the rest outgrow it ( real GID is lifelong), and most of them would have been gay but now they’re eunuchs.
Whether men are allowed into women's spaces *is* my business. Whether a 'trans woman' dresses in women's clothes and wears makeup is not my business.

And now we're seeing just how much alike they are to their sworn enemies, the Trumper MAGAs. Brand new dictators, same as the last.
