Being an ally, in some people's minds, is about being faithful to the orthodoxy. Not being honest or thinking for themselves. That's why they are so quick to block people and why they rely on accusations of bigotry instead of actual arguments.
One of the things I try to do with my writing is convince people like him that it's possible to be both kind *and* honest. That supporting people by being a fanatic makes things worse. Believe it or not, it works sometimes!
